After the completion of the architectural survey in the National School of Judicial Officers building in Thessaloniki, a study, for the buildings energy and aesthetic upgrade, was carried out, in addition to the proposal for the surrounding landscaping
In this study, a survey was carried out through a questionnaire to the occupants of the building, concerning the thermal comfort, lighting, ventilation, facilities, and the surrounding area of the building. The thermal and visual comfort conditions of the building during the winter and summer season were investigated, as well as the problems encountered by the occupants of the building.
Upon completion, of the questionnaire, the directions and design choices were determined. The set of measures proposed for the building were evaluated, considering energy efficiency and environmental comfort issues in combination with the building's morphology, construction methods, materials, structural elements, shell characteristics, climate as well as microclimate elements of the area.
Furthermore, the original principle governing the building was evaluated, both because of its identity but also as part of the Centre for International and European Economic Law. The positive characteristics of the building were taken into account and exploited, which mainly include its location, the favorable view, and the direct contact with nature elements : the sea, the coastal front as well as the dense surrounding vegetation.
Particular Emphasis was placed on the shell upgrading and the implementation of an external sun protection system, which was deemed necessary for energy efficiency reasons but also to improve the visual comfort inside the building. The energy upgrade serves as an opportunity to redefine the building and address both functional and morphological issues. In addition to changing the external frames and installing a thermal insulation system on the external shell, the handling of the facades is being redefined.
The design choice for the installation of new cladding and shading blinds on the external facades of the building, will act as a new bark and optical filter and will also reshape and upgrade the facades. At the same time, necessary manipulations are made for its functional upgrading, such as the appropriate placement of roofing. The remodeling of the surrounding area aims at its utilization and upgrading, as it makes the surrounding area a vital part of the building's operation for employees and trainees.
