Floodguard Project: Enhancing Cross-Border Flood Management with Evrymap Web GIS Platform
The Floodguard project, funded by the INTERREG VA Greece-Bulgaria 2014-2020 Cooperation Programme, aims to foster cooperation between Greece and Bulgaria in managing flood risks in the cross-border river basins of Evros, Nestos, and Strymonas. This project focuses on developing a comprehensive action plan for flood prevention and response, leveraging advanced geospatial technologies and data analytics.
Project Overview
The primary objective of the Floodguard project is to enhance flood risk management through cross-border collaboration. By installing telemetric water monitoring stations in the river basins of Evros, Nestos, and Strymonas, real-time data on water levels, temperature, pH, depth and other critical indicators are collected. These smart sensors, installed by ScientAct, feed data into a sophisticated web-GIS platform developed by Consortis Geospatial, named Evrymap.
Evrymap Web GIS Platform
Evrymap is a cutting-edge web-GIS platform designed to store, manage, and display the data collected from the telemetric water monitoring stations. The platform offers a user-friendly interface where users can view real-time data on a map portal and dashboard. The link to access the platform is http://floodguard.m-t.gov.gr/evrymap/map
Key Functionalities of Evrymap
1. Navigation Tools
Users can navigate the map using mouse buttons or on-screen controls. Zooming in and out is possible with the scroll wheel, while buttons provide options to return to the default view or previous extents.
2. Search Address
An address bar allows users to search for specific locations by entering the name of a town, city, or area. The platform then provides a list of matching locations, enabling users to zoom into their area of interest.
3. Identification Tool
This tool extracts information about objects on the map. Users can also use the polygon tool to create a polygon around an area, selecting all objects within it. The results can be downloaded in .csv or .shp format.
4. Thematic Layers
Users can manage thematic layers, choosing which layers to display and adjusting the level of detail. They can arrange layers according to their preferences and toggle the visibility and eligibility of each layer for more detailed information.
5. Distance and Area Measurement
Evrymap includes tools for measuring distances and areas. Users can draw lines or polygons on the map to measure distances or areas, with options to zoom in or delete measurements.
6. Coordinate Navigation
Users can navigate to specific points by entering coordinates in various systems, such as Google coordinates, EGSA ’87, and WGS’84. They can also display coordinates for points on the map.
7. Map Printing
Evrymap allows users to print maps, adjusting settings like page size, orientation, scale, grid step, title, and description.
Dashboard and Data Visualization
Evrymap’s dashboard is linked to an Apache Superset database, providing visual representations of the collected data through diagrams and charts. Users can view real-time data from each water monitoring station, including water pH, temperature, level, and depth. The dashboard allows users to customize the time period and view specific data ranges, with options to download data in image or .csv format.
By integrating these functionalities, the Floodguard project aims to improve flood risk management and response in the Evros, Nestos, and Strymonas river basins. The collaboration between Greece and Bulgaria, supported by advanced geospatial technology, ensures a robust and proactive approach to mitigating flood risks in these cross-border areas.
